A little too sleazy and exploitative--the producer in Preminger never took his eye off the box office--but Sinatra and Parker are good here. Even Arnold Stang--the Gilbert Gottfried of time--is pretty good here.

nothing special here, the writing is pretty sub par, the acting is on average bad, and the direction is meh. the praise is unfounded, and a few of the characters make this movie borderline unwatchable. the kicker for me was parker as zosch, if i were frankie that woman would have made the movie end a lot sooner...and as a murder/suicide.

This must have been quite shocking in its time. Despite being very mild by todays standards, it makes an interesting change from typical 'womens' pictures of that era.

The portrayal of a heroin addict is a little simplistic and one-dimensional by today's standards (one night of cold turkey and you'll be a-ok, I promise!), but it must have been quite shocking to the audiences of the time, particularly as it was Sinatra who was doing the shooting up. The film itself is decent, but quite predictable, and some of the characters are a bit cartoony and clichéd.

A fairly simple film, though it was way taboo back in the day. Sinatra does a great job. Saul Bass rules.

A very solid film. The first thing that struck me was the cinematography; lots of long takes with very mobile and dynamic camerawork. The jazzy score is sweet, too. This is a pretty frank depiction of drug addiction, and the film is virtually untouched by Hollywood sensibilities. Some of the writing and acting reveal it as a product of its time, though. At first I didn't think Sinatra was right for the role, but I became convinced. Gotta respect the nerve it took to make this picture.

I ought to like this better than I do. Maybe it's because I'm used to much more frank treatments of this same subject matter. Maybe it's because I'm tired of the whole aesthetic of urban-set '50s Hollywood movies
