Summary: In old Spanish California, the oppressive colonial government is opposed by Zorro, masked champion of the people, who appears out of nowhere with flashing sword and an athletic sense of humor, scarring the faces of evildoers with his Mark. Meanwhile, beautiful Lolita is courted by villainous Captain Ramon, rich but effete Don Diego... and dashing Zorro, who is never seen at the same time as Don Diego. Fun, if unoriginal, telling of a familiar story. Fairbanks as Don Diego is a drag but he's great as Zorro. If there's one thing he sells well it's the idea that the mask really does transform the man.

Still a fun, entertaining movie nearly 100 years later. Guy Williams is still my favorite Zorro, but you can see where Douglas Fairbanks laid the groundwork for future interpretations of the character. Fairbanks had some nice parkour moves, too.

for the most part it's fairly slow moving, but when the swordplay is on...IT IS ON!!! everyone knows zorro's trademark style, humiliate the enemy, carve "Z"s in everything, and who couldnt love that? i do wish that the love story was scrapped for some more swashbuckling though. an ok movie bogged down with lack of the action and adventure we were promised.
