The most enjoyable of all swashbucklers. Powers performance is marvelously fey, Rathbone and Sondergaard are at the top of their form, and Linda Darnell has never been more beautiful.

Very standard-issue for a movie that I've heard is a classic all my life. All the elements are here -- good guys, bad guys, swordfights, chases, The Babe, etc., etc. -- delivered without much inspiration or deviation from the strictly expected... and the hero acts way too much like an idiot for me to believe that he's a legendary guerrilla warrior for truth and justice

It's a bit sillier than I expected but still a good deal of fun.

This was so much fun! It's quite surprising how well it's aged too. I don't really know what else to say other than it's good swashbuckling action. Rathbone could have done with a bit more screen time and being more villainous. Linda Darnell positively glows every time she's on screen.

The tale is legend and Mamoulian retells it with economy and flair. Power is heroic, Rathbone evil, Darnell ravishing. A great classic adventure that has stood the test of time far better than, say, 'The Adventures of Robin Hood'.
