the story goes nowhere, the drama is nonexistent, and it's lacking in everything that makes Rohmer's other films great and unique.

Surprisingly good, especially considering it lacks quite a bit of what normally makes Rohmer's films so distinctive and enjoyable. The plot gets a bit muddled at points, but for the most part the film is emotionally engaging.

I really want to see a film by Rohmer that I can file in the same category as Gene Hackman once put it "I watched a Rohmer movie once.. it was like watching paint dry" - and I genuinely thought this would be it, but it was okay and somewhat engaging. Though at times too moralistic, but that's what he aims at, so - can you blame him?

What at first appears to be an ill-advised attempt at a period piece eventually unfolds as a pointed critique of 19th-century morality, and a rich exploration of cruelty and forgiveness. The story develops nicely, and the interplay between characters is as revealing as Rohmer's contemporary work. Terrific performances from all four leads. Gorgeously lit scenes arranged in compositions that can only be called "painterly". Not as deeply involving as Rohmer's other movies, but still packs a punch.

The film's slow, stately pace and the quiet way in which it makes its points give it the aura of a neoclassical dream, a fading vision of the virtue of gentility.

A good period drama from Rohmer, nice costumes, good performances and a predictable but still interesting story. Can't say I'm all that excited about it, but it has few flaws.
