What kind of wonderful, sick, talented person can make this in 1934? It's like Tim Burton and Pixar collaborated to make a short half a century before either of them existed.

It was definitely interesting and needless to say it was great stop-motion for its time, but I did groan at the ending. I also would like to see someone re-score this as the music was fucking AWFUL.

Very very impressive. Good even by todays standards, trail blazing by 1934 standings (in terms of animation and whatnot). My favourite characters are; the lovable dog and the badass with a knife who stabs the devil (he doesn't give one little bit of a fuck). This is really good stuff though... an interesting story told mostly with visuals, a surreal Hell, and oranges. It's all about the orange.

An obvious precursor to 'Toy Story' although it is clear that in terms of story and stop-motion technique, this displays an artform in it's infancy. And for the Techno lovers out there: Was I the only one thinking "Tricky Disco" more than once?

A whimsical, dark yet uplifting short that one would think is nearly forgotten and underrated, until you feel its residual effects in stuff like Toy Story and Nightmare Before Christmas. Even scarier than the Toy-Shantytown-Hell is how great the animation is, over 75 years later.

Starewicz had really honed his craft by this time. The animation has evolved from being crude but charming, to highly impressive and even more charming. The Mascot dabbles in some bona fide Buńuel-style surrealism, and the score is really good too. At the center of it all is a wonderfully animated toy dog, which puts most of the other animated dogs I've seen to shame as far as lovableness goes. Really amazing.

Pretty impressive animated short that proves that stop-motion had already been mastered in the earlier decades of cinema. Manages to be macabre and cute at the same time.

This is one of those pictures you never thought anyone would actually make until you discover it: a fantasy metaphorical rendering of the shantytowns that sprang up in and near major cities all over the world in the throes of the Great Depression. Outstanding special effects and animation, especially for the time, supporting a classic tale: doesn't every kid think or hope that his beloved dolls are actually alive? I hereby join the loud cheering for this film without the slightest reservation

Holy shit, this is amazing. Starts off as kind of a cute bit of whimsy, then takes an insane descent into Satan's surreal nightclub. Fantastic animation and loads of imagination.
