Summary: Ellen McNulty sells her New Jersey hamburger stand and heads west to pay a surprise visit to her son and his new bride. When Ellen arrives, her daughter-in-law mistakes her for the maid she has hired for a big party her husband is throwing to impress his boss. Mitchell Leisen's direction is elegant, Charles Brackett's screenplay is witty, Gene Tierney is gorgeous, John Lund (as usual) is better than he is given credit for, Miriam Hopkins is super-bitchy, and Thelma Ritter gives what is arguably the best performance of her career. There's more, but that's enough. How much more do you want?
