Summary: Jason Statham stars as an experienced hit man who decides he's ready to retire his weapons once and for all -- after he finishes training eager young apprentice Steve McKenna (Ben Foster) in the ways of the professional kill. But the assassin's bosses are not pleased when they discover their man is giving away his trade secrets. Simon West directs and Donald Sutherland co-stars in this action-packed remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson thriller.
Ben Foster is pretty damn fantastic in this but Statham I could easily do without to be honest. The highlight of the film is undoubtedly the absolutely brutal fight between Steve (Foster) and his first target. Aside from that the film is completely forgettable, additionally the changed ending from the original feels like a tacked on and stupid addition.
Without Foster's intense performance, this would be just another shiny music-video action film (director West's specialty). But the actors here treat the material with more respect than it probably deserves, and the content, which pushes boundaries for both R-rated homoeroticism and violence, is refreshingly left of center. (For example, key scene involving a garbage disposal and an adolescent would typically find no place in your standard-issue action film, but it works here, and works well.)
A cloddish, lunk-headed actioner, stuffed with too many extraneous plot threads, unnecessarily and elaborately developed supporting players, and a surprisingly nasty, near-misanthropic tone that keeps it from being any fun. Statham's a reasonable modern-day equivalent of Bronson, but this flick's way too messy to be anything other than forgettable
When you watch a movie in which Jason Staham is casted as a hitman you know in advance what you can expect. I was fairly dissapointed however. But that wasn't Staham's fault.
The Mechanic is fun for about 45 minutes, but after it begins degenerating into generic action sequences, I lost interest. Watching Statham be a professional hitman was enjoyable, but only when he was staying true to his calm demeanor. Once we get shootouts, the film lost its focus, leading to me no longer caring about it. It'll satisfy people who are entertained by loud noises and pretty lights, but if you want more depth to your action film, you'll want to look past this forgettable flick.
The Mechanic has many detractors, but I found myself quite enjoying this one. The plot was hardly a masterpiece and I was not a fan of the ending, but overall I was entertained. Jason Statham & Ben Foster weren't playing the most dimensional characters, but the action scenes were well staged and the actors looked cool pulling it off.
