Summary: Flemish master Pieter Bruegel’s 1564 “The Procession to Calvary” that depicts Christ’s crucifixion and Flandres under Spanish occupation. Compared to Sokurov’s Russian Ark in terms of cinematic experience, the film focuses on 12 of the 500 historical, religious, military figures in the painting: a crucified farmer, Virgin Mary, a wealthy burgher, even Bruegel himself explaining the symbols hidden in the canvas. You'll be hard pressed to find a more beautiful, accomplished and heartfelt love letter to the life and work of an artist, and an appreciation of his time and place than this majestic piece. It may not be to everyone's taste but it's a film like no other and to judge it you really have to see it rather than read about it because words don't do it justice.

Far more impressive than it is engaging, an endorsement of this film veers suspiciously close to calling it "good for you" in that way that so many boring films are sold as. Also, I'm not sure if this film actually adds anything to the experience of viewing Bruegel's landscape; anything the film has to say is pretty much right there in the painting already. Yet, it is still an experience worth having, if only to admire the audacity of the staging of this project.
