Flawed in many ways, but still worth watching if you have some free time. Robert De Niro & Jeremy Irons both put i good performances. As did Liam Neeson. A very solid period piece, and mostly well-acted, with the odd exception of De Niro - I don't think he can really handle such a role, and he plays it pretty by-the-numbers. However, the movie feels just a bit hollow to me. It's worth noting Ennio Morricone's (expectedly) great score.

Beautiful and moving, one of the best period films I know. Unfortunately, it is often misunderstood, either as missionary propaganda or as an atheist movie, but it's neither; it is about history. Rarely has a film captured the universal processes behind "history" as well as this one; the relationship between the individual and structure, the clash of cultures, the struggle of conflicting ideologies. Excuse the rambling, I just really love this movie.

Bolt's screenplay is inspired. It shows great depth and wisdom. The viewer is constantly challenged by the ideas portrayed, and the film never absolutely submits to the ideals of the impassioned minority. But the viewer is left feeling 'what if?' The direction and cinematography are satisfactory, but what if someone like Malick or Lean had been involved and given some time to let the film breathe with art for the sake of art. This film should have been a masterpiece, and a 90 plus score from me.
