I wouldn't have minded if the brutality taking place had been more explicit on screen. Joffé's film seems too restrained in a way; he could, for instance, have further explored some of his weighty themes, e.g. the morality of being a martyr, the hypocracy of the church etc. and, by the end, I was a bit disappointed. Not by the outcome - rather by my lack of emotional involvement. It's solid, if not quite great. Morricone's score is, however, and Irons outshines the likes of De Niro and Neeson.

A wonderfully inspiring film, The Mission successfully interprets the impact of Catholicism on the Guarani Indians. With superb acting from both Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, the audience feels complete empathy for the Guarani and are able to relate with the internal struggle Irons is faced with. The Mission tells a beautiful story of redemption, sacrifice, and love.

Incredibly far-out drama about the weight of souls of primitives on the consciousness of the western world. Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson and Robert Deniro did not labour in vain.

Oh making use of people's belief isn't some kind of abuse, right?

A peculiar film - due probably to its slow-burning romanticism and unapologetic religiosity. Although its magnificent acting and cinematography are nothing to brush casually aside, it's Morricone's score that really elevates this into something enigmatically spiritual.

It is hard to fault a film as well made as "The Mission". While it does nothing out of the ordinary, or particuarly different to inspire, there is no denying just how well put together this movie is, even if it never quite seems to do enough to elevate itself to truly brilliant. High production values, good photography, effective score, great cast, top performances and a plethora of rather splendid beards make for excellent viewing.
