This is one very offbeat western. The film has an interesting cast and the story for the most part keeps entertaining. Marlon Brando gives one of his extremely weird performances. Jack Nicholson and most of the supporting cast are very good in this film. Give this movie a try if you like westerns.

Big director, lots of stars, results that are not terribly affecting at all. I've seen this called one of the worst "big" movies ever made

Brando at the very beginning of his anything goes, deliberate insanity phase, and Nicholson still wrapped in the energy of his wild genius phase and yet it feels drab. The plot about Brando's hired lawman bringing a gang of rustlers to justice is so familiar that all the offbeat details thrown in can't enliven it. Even when the two masterful actors face off, it often and quickly degenerates into a dull trudge.
