Summary: Loosely inspired from Gauguin's life, the story of Charles Strickland, a middle-aged stockbrocker who abandons his middle-classed life, his family, his duties to start painting, what he has always wanted to do. He is from now on a awful human being, wholly devoted to his ideal: beauty. (imdb)

Lewin--like his mentor Thalberg--is too cautiously genteel in his approach to create real art. Nevertheless, this movie deserves credit for making a real attempt to understand the singlemindedness of the artist and to accept--if not excuse--his failures as a human being. George Sanders gives one of his least suave and yet most powerful performances.
