Read the story, it was good but not really a classic. Watched the movie...well, why is this so loved also? Maybe I need to watch it alone instead of with my 9th grade English class, but I still can't see me liking it that much more.

Robert Armstrong plays a great drunk in this classic suspense/adventure movie.

Feels a lot like King Kong which was being shot at the same time with much of the same crew. This might be the first American film about a serial killer and his pathology, and the film was pretty racy for its time (note the implication that Zaroff achieved a sexual release from hunting). It's a little corny by today's standards, and Zaroff has the fakest Russian accent ever (and he certainly must be insane to wear a black turtleneck in the tropics).

Dated in many respects (especially Fay Wray's character), and the very short length hurts it more than helps. Otherwise, it's good, and the hunt scenes are wonderfully tense and exciting.

Bad acting, worse dialogue, stupid characters, groan-worthy comic relief, some of the most hilariously staged fight sequences you'll ever see...but, it's neither boring nor long, and it repurposes the killer sets from King Kong, so it's not a total loss.

The art direction in this is beautiful and the story's told faithfully enough so I was entertained. Yeah, it's sexist and there's an ethnic villain with a goatee and the acting is horrible but this is classic hollywood so I'll let it pass. It makes me want to see King Kong.

Take a short story that wasn't all that great to begin with and have Hollywood add a stereotypical dim-witted broad and you get this thing. Reading about Rainsford's attempts to outwit Zaroff wasn't too bad, but waching him do it while dragging a woman along behind him was taxing. The only reason I rated it this high was because it's only an hour long. Points for brevity.

This was a film burdened with over melodramatic acting from Leslie Banks and Robert Armstrong, and a wasted performance by Fay Wray. The storyline must have been frightening back in 1932, unfortunately, the acting borders on camp, and this leaves the film utterly devoid of realism.

Over-acting abounds, with Leslie Banks the main culprit. His Russian accent sounds a lot like Aleksandr the Meerkat, and I swear he slips into a Scottish brogue on more than one occasion. That said, the final twenty minutes or so - once "the game" begins - are quite exciting, and there's a real sense of dynamism and danger, enhanced by the energetic music. Overall, it's corny-but-fun, and only a shade over an hour long.

I watched this one when I was younger, about 15 or 16 and it was on TV in the middle of the night, I didn't remember its name and found it recently-ish. Thinking about it, it actually is a bit like Hostel minus the gore and violence on screen, but the concept is there. Apart from that, I don't remember too much apart from that the owner of the castle was really crazy.

This could have been great but bad acting and its short length keep it at pretty good. The premise is very interesting, but so much more could have been done to build atmosphere both before and especially during the hunt and Wray is completely wasted. Still, the hunt is very tense and the film is quite enjoyable.

If you've read the classic short story, you know damn well that a chick just doesn't belong in this kind of tale, even if it's Fay "Get your hands off me, you big ape" Wray. It's still watchable, but there's just too much Hollywood baloney pollution

Dreadful acting from everyone except Joel McCrea, and some horribly outdated sexual politics (Fay Wray's character, utterly useless for anything but screaming, becomes the prize). Despite these flaws, an exciting movie that moves at a breakneck pace. Barely a second is wasted.
