Atmospheric and subtle chiller with Karloff at his best in the title role. Still the best Mummy ever to dust up the screen. Beautifully photographed.

Great atmospheric direction from Karl Freund, beautiful photography by Charles Stumar, and a touching yet creepy performance from Karloff.

Decent story brought up a notch with an enthralling performance from Karloff that makes up for the somewhat wooden rest of the cast.

A little slow but a classic in its own right. Karloff makes it worthwhile.

I thought it dragged on a little to be honest. It was all a bit nonsensical. Karloff was obviously great as the Mummy but the rest of the characters were a bit uninteresting.

The atmosphere and tension are decent but "The Mummy" is one of the few classic 30s UMM's that I just don't get (the 50s Hammer loose remake being far more enjoyable).

Karloff is wonderful as always and Zita Johann is splendid, but the script does no favors to David Manners or his character. Still quite solid.

Often quite corny, but there are some truly resplendent moments of creepiness to be had, almost entirely thanks to Karloff's performance as the titular villain. The art direction gets downright campy for the ancient flashbacks; it's about as culturally accurate as The Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian." Still, Karloff is very obviously a legend for a reason, and the camerawork assists his talents with some great closeups while the sound of silence slowly becomes unsettling.

The only real reason to watch this is for Karloff's wonderful performance as the mummy. His mannerisms and intensity elevates this, but also highlights the completely uninteresting characters that populate the rest of the movie.

Zita is captivating; simply impossible to tear yourself away when she's on the screen. Karloff is is also mesmerizing in a mostly unsung role. A too often overlooked gem from Universal.

Nice make-up job on Karloff. But not much else for this film to be proud of. It has undergone few butchering sessions due to strict code of the Hollywood at the time, so there are lots of loose ends. Also you easily draw parallels to Dracula (1931) film - story is exactly the same, just replace vampire with mummy, cross with ankh, and you have yourself this film.

Boris (billed as "Karloff, the Uncanny") steals the horror show via his solemn portrayal of ancient Egyptian high priest Im-ho-tep. Freund imbues the eerie proceedings with a darkly hallucinatory quality, while young archaeologist Fletcher delivers the best nervous breakdown I've ever seen on-screen.

i'm saddened that i had gone all these years thinking that the old monster movies were the best. i know now that this one suffers from some serious editing issues as well as being pretty boring until the last half-hour, at that point it does pick up, but only enough to be average at best.
