The Mystery of Picasso (1956)

Summary: Using a specially designed transparent 'canvas' to provide an unobstructed view, Picasso creates as the camera rolls. He begins with simple works that take shape after only a single brush stroke. He then progresses to more complex paintings, in which he repeatedly adds and removes elements, transforming the entire scene at will, until at last the work is complete. (imdb)

Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole. You couldn't call him unproductive either. This fascinating documentary shows Picasso cranking out drawings. Each drawing is its own narrative, in a way, with a beginning, middle and end. It's interesting that you can still see the beginning while the end draws near.

The Maestro paints and paints, simple pieces in color and black and white, mostly uninterrupted, for 75 minutes. Sounds boring, right? But, through a unique process, the audience watches his work unfold as if painted by a disembodied being. Unexpectedly fascinating.

Watching Picasso's paintings shapeshift their way to an end result is fascinating and a real gift to anyone who has interest in the creative process.

I love the way Clouzot was able to squeeze in a suspenseful "is he gonna finish in time?" scene.

Clouzot shows us Picasso's art as we've never seen it before - in motion, as Picasso paints. All art lovers must see this. This is a work of high cultural significance and artistic merit in more than just the visual sense: The soundtrack by Georges Auric contributes immensely.

Very interesting. You can watch Picasso as he builds the drawings, taking things out, putting other things in, changing them around. Unless it was a put-on, he himself didn't know at the beginning where he was going to end up.

Watching this, I'm reminded of the story of the Fox and the Hare. The Picasso, ever so confident and strong, runs laps around Clouzot, until they ultimately arrive together at the same destination.

A fascinating and beautiful document. Most of the movie is a blank white canvas that, through a clever filmic technique, becomes gradually filled with Picasso's art. It's a perfect scenario for a master of suspense like Clouzot, you never know what's going to happen next, you can never guess where the picture is heading. And the end results are breathtaking. Loaded with wit and whimsy and stunning imagery, that provides valuable insight into Picasso's craft.
