Who would guess that I would become completely enthralled watching a film about fishing? Before I watched it I couldnt have thought of a more boring plot. I also avoided this film for the better part of my life because I didn't believe that S Tracy could pull off the old Cuban fisherman. Boy was I wrong. This movie is a great adaptation of Hemingway's classic. He was known for a simplistic, direct style. This is the visual representation of that style. Tracy is great and the story is engrossing

i'll tell you what, tracy plays a cuban a heck of a lot better than you would think. as for the movie, it's fairly watchable, a bit drab at times and drags on. my biggest complaint is the god awful fake fish, it's definitely laugh worthy.

Tedious. Extremely poor use of voice-over, merely duplicating what we already see on the screen.

Too much narrative and voice-over, having not many great cinema elements. Still an interesting adaptation, another way to know the Hemingway's work having many lines literally spoken. Spencer Tracy was a great choice for the character, looking rude but also having that tender side he always shows. Good movie, a bit poor technically and cinematographically sometimes, trusting too much in the words instead of trying to convert into image. I'll recommend Aleksander Petrov's.

Last time I saw it at least 15 years ago. I'd be shattered if I don't like it now, so I won't attempt a rewatch.
