Summary: Hart is a confused first year law student at Harvard. He is trying to survive the year under his strictest professer, the legendary Kingsfield. With the help of some of his classmates in his study group, Hart becomes one of the smartest students in his class. It's a good thing we regard and pay lawyers so highly or no one but masochists would put themselves through this kind of dehumanizing bullshit. God bless them up there at the top, it would cause me to have a nervous breakdown. The script is well thought out and realistic. With a slightly better director and a more prestigious cast, this could've been great. Houseman won an Oscar for this, and while it's a good performance, it looks better than it is when compared to his struggling counterparts.

The actors r all great (tho years of knockoffs has somewhat diminished Houseman's archetype) & the film achieves its main goal of making higher education look glorious while exploring the hardships & emotional costs of trying to excel at Harvard Law. However the romance is lacking. Since the friction between Wagner & Bottoms is so clearly drawn it only highlights the fact that the film seems 2 have 0 interest in giving us some understanding as 2 y the hell these 2 want 2 keep seeing 1 another.

There is something fascinating about watching other people pretend to struggle, and act as if it may all just fall apart, especially when you know that it will all work out in the end. This fascination does not always lead to a fantastic movie, although in this case things worked out alright. Bottoms was uniquely charming, and his attitude really carried the film, although his character was something incongruously unpredictable.

As a survivor of a top grad program, this movie connects with me. Kingsfield is definitely a personality found at almost any academic insitution.

Not really what law school is like anymore, but still every law student should see this.

Lest anyone forget, we all live in two disparate realities: the way things actually are and the way we imagine them to be.
