Summary: Funloving Pearl White, working in a garment sweatshop, gets her big chance when she "opens" for a delayed Shakespeare play...with a comic vaudeville performance. Her brief stage career leads her into those "horrible" moving pictures, where she comes to love the chaotic world of silent movies, becoming queen of the serials. But the consequences of movie stardom may be more than her leading man can take. (imdb)

The script is terrible, the songs forgettable John Lund wooden, the direction only so-so. But Betty Hutton gives her all--as she invariably does--and that's enough for me. (Betty is so in touch with her "inner child" that every performance she gives is hilarious, heartbreaking, but finally terrifying because at her moments of greatest intensity there's no adult up on the screen at all: nothing but a scared two-year-old prepared to do whatever she must be be looked at and--ultimately--loved.)
