I wanted to love this film and it sure started out strong. It gave a good background on the origins of Apartheid under the guise of a coming-of-age story. But it got too didactic and melodramatic. It's worth seeing but don't expect a masterpiece. Also expect to have trouble understanding the child narrator's thick accent for the first 1/3 of the film.

A poor transition from novel to screen: the movie is not bad, but seems awkward and shallow compared to the book.

A crappy, simplistic film; the black characters are all wise, kind, and good, while the Afrikaaners are all mean, vicious, and evil. As annoying as such propaganda is, it's hardly redeemed by either the story or any kind of excitement. The picture is tortuously long, containing few significant events. Those that are present, such as the school bullying, or the boxing, are done in the most cliche manner possible. Oh, and the school bully grows up to be a violent murdering racist. Of course.

Such an amazing story about the aparthied. A very courageous white english boy helping the helpless south african blacks. This is a movie to help stop racism. If you are not too keyed on violence, it will be hard to watch. I thought i wouldn't be able to handle the movie, but i just love morgan freeman very much as well as boxing.
