Summary: When Grandduke Charles, the prince-regent of Carpatha, a fictitious Balkan country which could start a European war by switching alliances, visits London for the coronation of the new British king in 1911, and spends his one evening off at the Coconut Girl club, the reputed stickler for protocol is so charmed by a clumsy American understudy that he orders his British attaché to invite her to the embassy for a private supper... Right from the opening title and credits, The Prince and the Showgirl seemed very dated and not in a good way. The narrative was predictable and the sets and direction very stagey. Cinematography was very 1950’s colourful. Marilyn Monroe played her role well. She was luminous without being too dipsy. Laurence Oliviers part was too much of a caricature so he was never convincing or likeable.

Strong cast with a mildly rediculous plot. Filmed in typical London studio pallette with fairly lavish sets and some strong workmanlike performances from Olivier and Sybil Thorndyke (although she does seem to be playing Lady Bracknell). Marilyn Monroe is firmly within her comfort zone although less breathy than usual. Worth watching if only for the archive material included. Gently romantic comedy
