It certainly isn't a bad film, but the last half hour or so is very dramatic and over-emotional. Most of the acting here is pretty good, in particular Nolte and his mother in the film Kate Nelligan. The story is decent and the way it is unraveled is pretty good. Nolte is the best thing here though. He is able to play his part seriously, but I felt he was very good at the comedic parts of his character.

Has some good moments but then has a totally stupid ending in which it turns into a Jon Bradshaw infomercial. Streisand gives us a lot of flattering shots of her own legs

Ugh, Barbara you might have a lot of fans, but you are an OVER-ACTOR!!!

A feelie. It's a well-conceived and well-played (by Nolte) character, a laughing-on-the-outside (or anyway wisecracking-on-the-outside) type, shaded in with the specific colorings of the South and what's dubbed here "the Southern way." But all of this is balanced and often outbalanced by the contributions of Streisand, who as co-star finds occasion to haul out most of her cute-and-kitteny repertoire, and as director does even greater damage with her unerring nose for soup.

Nolte and Streisand are spectacular in their roles, but ultimately the screenplay sinks during the third part of the movie.
