Neat ideas, but it could have been better

Horrible story, which is a shame because Christopher Walken is one of my favourite actors :/

Over the top performances from Viggo and Walken make this fun, but I was dissapointed in Koteas, whom I normally enjoy.

Interesting but sooo boring.

Was expecting stupid + entertaining, but I got stupid + boring instead. Once the 'Oh Shit It's Christopher Walken'-factor wears off, it just becomes a crawl to the finish line.

Widen fashions an original, surreal fright fantasy. While he apparently lacked the budget to give this the sweeping treatment it deserved, he still offers many a memorable tableau. Not every riff works and loose threads are left hanging, but this stacks up as a thoughtful, chilling addition to the religious-horror subgenre.

It should've been more epic that it is. It's still a great movie but it could've been better. The general premise is very interesting, Walken and Mortensen give amazing performances, but the child actor for Mary and some poor sections of dialog and cliche' cinema moments drag the movie down. If you can look past that, however, it's still a very good movie.

Walken is excellent as the Archangel Gabriel in this eerie tale about the fight for the human soul. Very entertaining film!

Strangely watchable crap. I've probably watched this straight through a dozen times - mainly as a teenager, but still. Geez.

In two hells there's one too many. Yes, I know. The story did not stand for closer look, but, man, did the director created enjoyable story. The dialogue was witty and all actors did they characters alive. Even the small girl was pretty good. There was a couple of pretty lame fighting scenes, but I loved 95% of the story. And of course I did not bite the strength of angels no more than a strong man.

Like the ideas behind the film and the performances. The ideas were too big to fit into a movie.

The movie is intriguingly oblique about what's going on, and eventually irritatingly so. And the lofty tone is lowered by campy portrayals of Gabriel-Gone-Bad (Walken) and Lucifer Himself (Mortensen). Upholding the tone to some degree are the fey tristesse of the Good Angel (Stoltz) and the tortured soulfulness of the Mere Human (Koteas).

The movie manages to portray religious detective without proselytism or attempts to convert. An interesting take on Christian mythology. Christopher Walken simply shines as a fallen archangel.

Points for Walken's creepiness and Viggo as Satan, but this is largely forgettable stuff.

decent little low-budget horror flick. walken is excellent, and it makes one wonder why he was never cast as a horror movie villain before (that i know of). and viggo mortensen absolutely rules, playing satan back before anyone knew who he was (mortensen, not satan). and i'm pretty sure Zao sampled this movie for Ravage Ritual, and that song owns bones. it definitely feels amateurish at times, and maybe if i saw it again its flaws would stick out more, but the good parts are what stuck with me.

Like the Terminator, only with Angel Walken instead of Robot Schwartzenegger. And a whole bunch of other differences. This review is going really well, I think.
