Summary: A missile, launched by the team led by Prof. Quatermass, lands in the English countryside. Of the three members of the crew, two have mysteriously disappeared. The third one, barely alive, undergoes an horrible metamorphosis turning into a monstrous "thing". When he breaks out and, chased in vain by inspector Lomax, starts killing humans and animals to feed his transformation, Quatermass realizes that this is the way chosen by an alien form of life to invade the Earth. Way above averegage cold-war, sci-fi movie. Well paced and with a great performance by Woodsworth delivering numerous creepy scenes. The footage from the spaceship shows a zero-gravity scene not unlike Kubricks '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

A British sci-fi horror film not much more intelligent than its contemporary American movies of that genre. Perhaps a bit more imaginative than average, its premise certainly earning it the distinction of a precursor to The Thing, but the text itself, especially the first half, is really stupid.

The first big international success for Britain's Hammer films. Guest does a good job at imaginatively masking this film's tiny budget and Wordsworth is effective as the silent, doomed astronaut. Look for Jane Asher (later a Paul McCartney girlfriend, and Vincent Price's co-star in _The Masque of the Red Death_) as the little girl Wordsworth encounters at the shipyard.

Enjoyable. A clear influence on Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".
