Summary: An American woman is stranded in Tokyo after breaking up with her boyfriend. Searching for direction in life, she trains to be a rāmen chef under a tyrannical Japanese master.
It's got some good heart to it, but it's really uneven in tone. There are a lot of subplots and side characters who never get fleshed out or serve much purpose. I did enjoy Nishida as the chef.
Dull: The character is weak, a perfect movie stereo type, the character's motivations are impossible to determine, the situations are uninteresting. In summery, the film is about soup, how exciting do you think it's going to get?
Never decides exactly on the tone and has some ridiculous supporting characters....but the core story about the magical properties of ramen was quite heartwarming...and true. It's extremely Japanese, which makes Brittany Murphy ideal casting as the pathetic lost American girl.
