A few big steps back from A Corner in Wheat. Condescending and compositionally muddy - there's a scene early on where one of the key characters is constantly half out of frame. Those are the types of mistakes filmmakers didn't usually make by this time, but here we are. Still, it's interesting to see an alternative perspective in such a young genre.

A somewhat surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of Native Americans, with a lovely score, hampered by Griffith's inability to make a film on racially sensitive topics without condescending minorities, when he throws that ridiculous "Song of Death" sequence in, with a bunch of white people playing dress-up and stomping around like stereotypes.
