Summary: Charles Dexter Ward's wife enlists the help of a private detective to find out what her husband is up to in a remote cabin owned by his family for centuries. The husband is a chemical engineer, and the smells from his experiments (and the delivery of what appear to be human remains at all hours) are beginning to arouse the attention of neighbors and local law enforcement officials... Wooden acting and lapses in logic didn't keep me from enjoying this for whatever reason. I guess I like the gooey monsters and creepy atmosphere.

I always enjoy John Terry, and Chris Sarandon does a good job in his role too. Unfortunately, this is a standard Lovecraft adaptation. They change the setting but still ace the creepy setup, and then...the film fizzles into mediocrity because it also abandons everything else that made Lovecraft's stories work.

The catacombs bit is a lot of fun, but Jesus Christ, O'Bannon - did your second unit guys shoot all of the flashbacks? The acting in those segments is, like, extra-on-Hercules caliber. The acting was one of the best parts of Return of the Living Dead and Dead & Buried, I'm shocked he dropped the ball so hard here.

The special effects were decent, and the story was at least interesting, but the acting was too wooden to be forgiven by any means. The inner-monologue made it all especially irritating.

Pretty decent as far as Lovecraft adaptations go. Some of the acting in this is appalling, though.

Attempt at a quality horror film that doesn't get there. John Terry should have gotten more breaks, though
