*Spoilers* Beautifully shot, superbly acted drama raises many fascinating questions about the nature of identity, and perceptions of others. An intelligent screenplay takes its time developing moral and ethical conflicts within the supporting characters -- but unfortunately cannot overcome the problem that "Martin" and his wife are essentially unlikable characters (even in a historical context, the actions, or inactions, of the wife are downright bizarre). Wonderful music score also helps.

One of Depardieu's best performances, and a film good enough to be made into a well liked English version as well ("Sommersby"). A family welcomes home its son from war only to later find out that all is not what it appears.
