The whole this lays on Hopkins sholders. I think he gets too much space to goof around with the character, but what is one to do when no one else is even trying to act.

This film made me want to see Hopkins in a much better exorcism movie. I didn't like the acting of everyone who wasn't Hopkins, I didnt like the religious push on the film..what else... I thought Kovak's whole story was just crap. not good..

Intruiging idea, but horribly executed. They brought up a lot of potential back stories, but none of them were fully dealt with, and then they didn't leave enough time for a proper ending, very anti-climactic. It's a movie that is lost and never really sure what it wants to be.

The Rite's depiction of exorcism is marked by the same cliches demonically possessing cinema ever since The Exorcist, but the plot does something a bit different: It throws an articulate skeptic into the fray, which might have been to its credit, if it didn't quickly shoot him down by suggesting that he is plagued by "certainty" - an ironic accusation coming from the church. Indeed, The Rite turns out to be Catholic propaganda masked as a horror film. It's also a waste of prime Anthony Hopkins.

This isn't a horror movie. It's a Christian movie in the Kirk Cameron, you must accept Jesus into your heart to save your soul, sense.
Horror movies deal with fear, loss, helplessness, better understanding the human condition in the face of the unknown. For all their silliness, they often contain a lot of nuance.
This film does not. It's about a young man's struggle to accept the word of God. Great if you like that kind of thing, but otherwise an irritating bait and switch.

the majority of the movie makes you walk a line on always having a doubt if these exorcisms are actually happening or they're just mentally disturbed people, which is an attribute i actually liked, but then it goes and screws that all up, leaving us with a slightly less than lukewarm movie.

It seems there is only so much you can do with the 'exorcism' horror genre and The Rite is a (if you pardon the pun) testament to that.
Worth a look if only to see Hopkins do what he does best (slapping girls around).

Pretty much terrible. Possessed people's limbs twisting in unnatural ways as they speak in a guttural voice is officially NO LONGER SCARY. Stop using this technique, exorcism movie filmmakers! The Rite directly references The Exorcist at one point to try to avert such comparisons, but it only ends up making things worse. Colin O'Donoghue gives one of the most bland, underacted leading performances I've seen on the big screen in years.

Falls into the trappings that make many horror movies dumb: shoving "based on true events" down the audience's throats and then showing stuff that is completely ridiculous, some really stupid jump scares, and a few played out themes. I thought the way the climax was resolved was really lame. Really the only reason this is watchable is for Anthony Hopkins and the girl who you first see as possessed. They both put in some solid performances.

I find myself wondering how many people picked up on the subtle wordplay used to counteract those who would yell foul at the "true events" angle. The movie is inspired by a book, that was inspired by true events, and the movie does say that, but does a great job of masking it. It's an inspiration piece, not a re-telling of true events. I really enjoyed it, it's hard not to enjoy Anthony Hopkins. Has some flawed dialogue and cheap scares, but very enjoyable and great at what it's meant to be.

I enjoyed the whole, dude is confused about his faith angle, and how other characters talk about it. The rest of the movie was solid in pretty much every way, though not anything extravagant and overly memorable. A horror flick that's at the high end of good but not very good. I also like seeing Ciarán Hinds.
