Summary: Caine plays a successful English novelist whose discontented wife, played by Jackson, decides to take a holiday to Germany in order to 'find herself'. There she meets an ambiguous young man in an elevator which initiates an often bizarre, but extremely mature examination of desire, responsibility and the nature of love.

Fascinating drama, similar in tone to Resnais' PROVIDENCE and no doubt with many echoes of LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD (unseen by me). Caine gives one of his best 70s performances (love him telling off Nelligan!) and Jackson is appropriately brittle as his adultress wife (or is she?) Berger also smooth and slimy in support. Witty screenplay and Losey's excellent direction can't fully compensate for the overly enigmatic tone (and puzzling ending) but the film itself remains hypnotic for the most part.
