Summary: Two drunks live in the same hotel. One beats his wife, the other is beaten by his. They go off and get drunk together. They try to sleep in a restaurant using tables as beds and are thrown out. They lie down in a row boat which fills with water, drowning them (a fate apparently better than going home to their wives). The first I ever saw of Chaplin. Unusually consistent for his very early work.

This one's pretty damn funny through and through. Arbuckle and Chaplin made a good team and I kind of wish they had partnered up again. One thing that needs to be pointed out, though, is the blackface gag which is to my knowledge the only racial joke in Chaplin's catalogue. I'm glad he kicked that habit so early.

Not at all funny, but extraordinary in one way: it managed to get me to find a couple of winos sympathetic, and I am normally so contemptuous of drunks and druggies that I laughed through much of _Requiem for a Dream_. Perhaps this is some of that "humanism" that the critics always mention when they discuss Chaplin. This is interesting because it's actually rather tragic beneath all the gags, especially when you know how Fatty Arbuckle ended up

Fairly humorous, but it's just neat to see both Chaplin and Arbuckle as a team.

A good time, as Charlie parades from one scene to the next completely drunk. He and Fatty Arbuckle have to escape their judgmental wives so that they can go out for more drinks. But getting away, and getting another drink, involve numerous fights and falls. Pretty standard stuff throughout, at least until the ending, which is quite well done.
