Summary: Leslie Howard plays Sir Percy Blakeney, an 18th century English aristocrat who leads a double life. He appears to be merely the effete aristocrat, but in reality is part of an underground effort to free French nobles from Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Based on the novel by Baroness Orczy. (imdb)

Probably the coolest thing about this movie is that the male lead is named 'Leslie' and the female lead is named 'Merle.'

Not at all bad. Just goes to show that a film from the 30's can still hold your disbelief. Stronly faithful to the book with stylish (although dated) acting styles. However, this only adds to this period piece. Don't write it off

"They seek him here, they seek him there/ Those Frenches seek him everywhere/ Is he in Heaven/ or is he in Hell?/ The damned elusive Pimpernel." "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is a neat, elegantly acted conspiracy thriller. In fact, it somehow reminded me of several '30s - early '40s Hitchcock films.

I don't remember much of this, but I do recall that Leslie Howard was very charming. Interesting for both the old-fashioned humour and the French Revolution setting.
