Minor Crawford vehicle, late MGM period, when Crawford's face had not yet hardened into a mask of suffering and still had the capacity to convey joy and passion. The plot begins unremarkably, hurtles toward the precipice of tragedy, only to veer away into a preposterously happy ending. If the film is worth watching at all, it is for the sincere direction of Frank Borzage, who takes love and passion seriously and makes his actors take them seriously too. Fay Bainter is marvelous as the baddie.
