Glorious pieces of macabre surrealism, that all feel physically heavy, weighted with despair and melancholia. Also includes a Frenchman and some cowboys.

Consisting mostly of his seventies shorts before he came to direct films, the content on here are not up to the quality of Lynch's features, but are fascinating, particularly bridging the gap between his origins as a painter to his film work. Even with the two versions of The Amputee (1974), shot to merely test two types of video reel, the fragments are interesting building blocks to ideas and moods he would return to.

A generous rating. The Grandmother and The Alphabet are enjoyable. Premonitions to an Evil Deed and Six Figures Getting Sick are mildly amusing but completely forgettable. The Amputee and The Cowboy and The Frenchman are shit.

Lynch's repertoire of short films is generally interesting and quite unique. It's hardcore surrealism and experimentalism. Most of them are not particularly good (though I dig "The Alphabet" a lot) but if you're trying to get a complete picture of Lynch as an auteur, or are interested in his biography, this collection, with the commentary and everything, is a necessity.

All the short films are atleast worth watching, and most of them are quite interesting. If you've already seen most of these shorts it's probably still worth getting because of the interesting commentary Lynch has on his own films.
