Summary: Detective novelist Philip Marlow (Michael Gambon) suffers from the crippling disease of psoriatic arthropathy. Confined to a hospital bed, Marlow mentally rewrites his early Chandleresque thriller, "The Singing Detective," with himself in the title role, drifting into a surreal 1945 fantasy of spies and criminals, along with vivid memories of a childhood in the Forest of Dean... Not my taste at all. The humour was off, the neo noir stuff was childish. One of the worst attempts at making a noir. Gambon does a good job, though. Just a shame his skin decease made him so repulsive.

Gambon is a great actor. Tour through the fantasy life of a tortured mind. Dense, convoluted, full of mysterious connections and internal correspondences. The structures of the symbols and events and their interrelations are as complicated as anything you will find in any novel by Joyce or Proust. Impressive.

It's a detective story, a character study and a bitter musical/comedy all rolled up into one. I really don't know how to describe the film, it relies so much on the finely balanced tone that just barely holds a grip on reality. Excellent characterizations and performances, but none better than Michael Gambon who gets better and better with each episode as the nuance of his character consumes the larger narrative in spectacular surrealism.

Need to see it again with some subtitles - just too much going on. One thing is sure, though - Gambon is brilliant.

Excellent with scenes that sometimes have you sitting still in shock. If you are looking for that bright happy ending it isn't here.

The ultimate tv series. Intensity lasts all six episodes. Dennis Potter's best work. Joanne Whalley fresh and young black eyed nurse. Neil Hardwick reedited his Pakanamaan kartta (Off the Map) tv series after seeing this one.

Well written and brilliantly acted, especially by Gambon, but doesn't have anything to make up for the very slow pacing. I completely lost interest halfway through.

One of the best TV shows (mini-series) of all-time. The psychological complexity took me by surprise.

One of the finest mini-series ever. The writing is first-rate. Grim, dyspeptic, but somehow life-affirming even amid the bleakness. Gambon is great. And Dennis Potter's choice of period music is inspired.

Not as good as I hoped -- sometimes it comes dangerously close to wearing out its welcome, what with its insistence on making every point about half a dozen times. For the most part, however, it's engaging, and refreshingly weird... especially for something made for British TV
