Summary: "The Straight Story" chronicles a trip made by 73-year-old Alvin Straight from Laurens, Iowa, to Mt. Zion, Wis., in 1994 while riding a lawn mower. The man undertook his strange journey to mend his relationship with his ill, estranged, 75-year-old brother Lyle. (imdb)
Obviously I eat and drink Lynch like everyone else, but this wasn't anything special. Even as a disney-feel-good movie, it's not quirky enough to escape its trashiness. This sounds harsher than I had intended it to.
Images of rurality combined with a pleasant story to produce a relaxing, heartwarming and charming film. It's nothing like his other work and I was amazed at just how well it worked. Badalamenti's score is also fitting. There's not much to say other than it does exactly what you would expect.
Tv ayarinda bir film, pazar sabahi ailecek izlenebilecek olanlardan. Yasli bir adamin kardesi ugruna cim bicme makinesiyle yollara dusup yuzlerce km yol yapmasini ve yolda yasadigi hikayeleri iceriyor.
Walt Disney presents...A David Lynch film? Weird pairing, but it worked out well. It's pretty unbelievable how much Farnsworth looks like the real Alvin Straight, nice casting. I like how the pacing of the film is married to how Alvin travels. The ending left me wanting more, it just seemed too anti-climatic. Not one of Lynch's best but still worth watching. You should also fast forward through the 911 joke in the beginning, god that was painful.
Most road movies are about the protagonist being changed by their experience on the road. The Straight Story is about the denizens along the road being changed by the protagonist (and, by extension, the audience is changed by the experience of riding with Alvin). Told in a leisurely episodic fashion, the effect is cumulative. Gradually, we come to understand more, to appreciate more, until the beauty is so great it overwhelms the heart.
