Pre-Hammer gothic horror movie. Well, not really horror, heavy-handed mystery/suspense is more fitting. Cast is interesting, but performances are mediocre. Film is very dull. Even though it uses many devices, like race against time, to built suspense, but it is done terribly clumsy. Shoot the director, I say.

Karloff's character is important to the story but somewhat lacking in screen time, but Laughton steps up and delivers a worthwhile performance. Pretty MOR pre-Hammer gothic horror piece that's not totally lacking in charm, but largely forgettable.
