A lot of things about this are off. The music is heavy-handed and creepy. Lancaster is not vulnerable enough for the role. The direction is dated. The dialogue is writerly. Yet, there is still something about this enigmatic journey that is worth watching --- once.

Superb performance by Lancaster in a movie which, although very much a product of its time, is nevertheless a unique critical reflection on the destructive elements of the direction American society was and is taking. Perhaps influenced to an extent by "Le Feu follet."

For the first half my Gay-dar and Weird-ar were ringing so loudly I could hardly concentrate. But after Burt meets his "former" "lover" the film hits its stride and is altogether fascinating. This is basically Silent Hill 2, but with sunny days and country club socialites instead of (...) monsters. Marred mostly by editing and music that reeks of amateurism.

I normally try to use all of my 500 characters when revewing movies on this site but I just can't summon the energy to waste my time on this. To borrow a gimmick from the great commenter, Gtown1479, when this film was over I turned to my date, incredulously asking, "What? Just, what? Why?! Why is this a movie? Why does this exist?" If I had a basket of plum tomatoes at my disposal while sitting through this, I would have started hurling them at my TV Fozzy Bear style. Hey, that's 500 characters!

What I love in this story was that it did not explain anything. You have to figure it out by yourself. Ned was clearly in the purgatory. Film needs several viewing to get closer picture what really happened to him that he deserved the state he ended up with. A beautiful, philosophical story with small details along the way.
