Summary: A spell of time in the life of a family living in rural Tochigi prefecture, north of Tokyo. Though her husband is busy working at an office, Yoshiko is not an ordinary housewife, instead working on an animated film project at home. Uncle Ayano has recently arrived, looking to get his head together after living in Tokyo for several years. Meanwhile, Yoshiko's daughter Sachiko is mainly concerned with why she seems to be followed around everywhere by a giant version of herself. (imdb)

Fantastic, weird movie. It's full of randomness (train coming from Hajime's head, uncle Ayano talking about taking a shit). It's friggin awesome! The grandpa is hilarious too. And the flipbook scene is absolutely fantastic. Only the Japanese can pull this off, which reminded me again why I love Japan so much

While it was often a joy to watch and sometimes incredibly funny, the lack of cohesive storyline ultimately left me grasping for something to hold on to. Still a nice movie though.

This film is best known for its surrealism and absurd humour, but there's a sophisticated sensitivity underlying it all. I don't know if there's a single unifying theme to be sussed out here, but the way Ishii manages to express the inner workings of the characters so strikingly in the midst of all the absurdity is what makes this my favourite of his movies.

It grabbed me at first, but it became too meandering and unfocused and eventually I lost it. Though not without its charm, it's too scattershot to ever quite give the characters any sense of reality. They remain collections of quirks rather than people. The over length and the lack of narrative drive are a particular problem. The characters don't change or grow, and the whole experience is just too inert.

I don't know if I've ever been quite as engaged by something with no real direction or narrative. It's a surreal glimpse into a short time with a family, no more or less, and it's very fulfilling. That flipbook sequence is one of the sweetest scenes I've ever seen.

Its Japanese brand of comedic surrealism reminds me of Survive Style 5+, only it is nowhere near as exciting or fast-paced. There are a few memorable scenes, but on the whole the film is too slow and aimless to have grabbed me on the first viewing.

It's like a cross between Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite, and insanity. Half of the movie moves pretty slow, but the rest is funny enough to make up for it, but it's still not for everyone. Some parts are also touching, so there are a number of people who will enjoy this.

This seemed like it should have been my kind of movie, but I found it too aimless (not to mention too long). Certain scenes on their own were clever or sweet or funny, but the lack of a cohesive voice, style or theme hurt it in the end. It's nice, though, but more so in its down-to-earth moments (like the lovely flipbook scene) rather than the surreal, dreamlike ones.
