A fairly ripe slice of fifties-style Biblical Cheese. The parting of the Red Sea still stands as a well-imagined scene.

Films are often given the tag 'epic' without really deserving it. This isn't one of them. The scope of the story is vast and the subject matter about as profound as it gets. That said you can enjoy this film without treating it as a religious film.
The cinematography, set design, costume and score are well ahead of their time and deeply impressive. The acting is solid in the main with a few hammy moments but still well worth watching

It's pretty funny with the sound on ("Oh Moses, Moses! You rash impetuous fool!), but actually rather impressive and moving if you turn off the sound and put some Bach on in the background.

If boredom were a disease, this movie would give you a terminal case. Brings back terrible memories of having to delay our news broadcasts - sometimes more than an hour - every Easter due to this film. You know you're getting close to the end when papa Moses comes down the hill to break up the kids' party...

Grandly epic, but thoroughly ludicrous, and oddly anti-Semitic. Heston is outclassed by every single actor he shares the screen with, especially Edward G. Robinson, giving a measure of dignity to a terrible, offensive character.

Masterly written script and gorgeous Charlton Heston are source of musing excitement. The Ten Commandments is epic in all ways it can be.

(after repeated viewing) 10 years since I've last seen it and still intermittently cheesy but also undeniably epic. Can't remember the number of times I saw this as a child. Awesome score by Elmer Bernstein.

The greatest sin this commits is creating the most boring onscreen Moses conceivable. It takes 50 minutes for him to show any hints of personality and after meeting with the bush on Sinai he just becomes an overzealous robot. It's not just Heston either, it's on the script level, half the scenes that should be structured around Moses instead follow the point of view of some usually trivial supporting character. This is Moses' quest as lived by bystanders, and it drags.

It's an enjoyable film, as long as you keep in mind the time period in which it was made and the spectacle that it was. By today's standards, yes, it's very much overacted, the effects are frighteningly bad (the Burning Bush and God's Finger, for example), it's heavy handed and corny. BUT it has a good message and it's worth watching.

Laughably dated on most counts, but still satisfies as THE Hollywood epic after which all others are patterned. It's still worth watching and still enjoyable, and this is coming from an atheist. Although it is a bit long...
