Summary: This is a story of a French advocate Chavel who, while imprisoned by the Germans during the occupation, trades his material possessions for his life with another prisoner when condemned to the firing squad. At the end of the war, Chavel, posing as one of the other prisoners, returns to his home which is now occupied by the prisoner's sister, Therese, who bitterly awaits the return of the man who had indirectly caused the death of her brother. a decent story, but the music makes it seem like a made for tv movie. hopkins is ok, but no one else is noteworthy. the plot may be entertaining, but it is a bit on the drab side.

While starts out as a powerful existential exploration with great acting form Anthony Hopkins, the film lags and dumbs down increasingly throughout, so thta by the end it feels entirely generic.

An interesting morality tale, but you should probably be watching Melville.
