Woodward's incredible tour-de-force, a deserved Oscar winner, forms the centrepiece of gripping drama, let down by occassional issues with censorship in the 50s (the ultimate resolution of Eve's disorder doesn't quite wash, despite being based on a true story). It may be Woodward's film, but Wayne (as baffled husband) and always wonderful Cobb as her psychiatrist provide excellent support.

Not bad for a psychological drama, pre-psycho!

Joanne Woodward is fine, but the story, which could have been so intense, was pretty dull.

An excellent performance by Joanne Woodward is the centerpiece of this film, but Wayne and Cobb are just right too--a perfect balance of warmth and iciness on the side. With the age of the film, the arc is predictable; the depiction of multiple personality disorder seems wildly inaccurate now, but at the heart this film is about a woman in the 1950's transforming in the attempt to transcend the weight she carries--I can't help but to see it as deeply allegorical.

Fascinating subject, perfectly acted. Certainly not the type of film those who like "Transformers" would enjoy, for it has a meaningful plot and emotive protagonists. But for those of us who appreciate filmmaking before the quick-cut and CGI, this is a gem not to be missed. The only bummers are the real-life stories behind the film. Apparently the real-life Eve received no $ from the film. She also says she had 26 personalities, not 3, contradicting Alistair Cooke's claim of the film's veracity.
