Though The Tree of Life is a set of great imagery and amazing cinematography, I have mixed feelings about it. I was really moved by this complex and profound journey into life itself and every human being in particular but the letter, I guess, derailed the whole impression about what could have been a classic.

Gorgeous and abstract. Definitely a polarizing film intended for an audience with an acquired taste. There is still something to behold by the end of it all.

Superbly made, elequently touching on some good subject matter. A little slow at times, but definitely meant to be more of a meditation piece than entertainment. Sure to leave you thinking about your own life and your own relationships.

It looks FANTASTIC (Douglas Trumbull was supervising this, so no surprise there). Mallick showed his conservative nature in this far too sentimental film. However I did enjoed it. Too much hugging if You ask me.

A film of almost constant greatness, but it is not the sum of all its parts. The evolution sequence is absolutely extraordinary (as is the scenes with the *omg* dinosaurs, but those scenes were far shorter than people hyped them up to be), but it's progression is halted by the family story, which is also great but becomes bloated later on. Plus, the modern-day scenes seem arbitrary and Sean Penn is wasted. There's plenty of magnificence in a film that isn't entirely magnificent

Tree of Life is a tough film to digest. Narrative-wise it plays out like a series of recalled memories with dialogue fading in and out drifting out of sequence, yet following a path of connected emotions. Pacing-wise this will be torture for anyone with ADD with the lack of plot and long meditative shots of the sky. Photography-wise its a clear masterpiece for Malick, with imagery that will stick long past the running time.

Even for Malick it's fragmented and existential to extremes. That will understandably alienate some, at least too a degree, but this film is epically beautiful. Not just to look at, but to listen to as well, with the brilliant musical score supremely effective. "The Tree of Life" can be interpreted many different ways, and won't provide any answers, but will pose you plenty of questions. Demands to be rewatched.

I've noticed two extremes in opinions on this film. Either great or existential/pretentious bullshit. I felt that it managed to fall into both categories. There were plenty of things to complain about and hate, but there were also so many good shots, a brilliant use of sound, and compelling characters. I'm gonna steal a line from my Rise of the Planet of the Apes review, There may be a few minor [complaints] I could make, but quite frankly, while watching the film I couldn't careless about them.

Loved everything about this film. Really rallied tons of emotions, the vastness of Malicks creation is incredible. I can't even be specific, it was just perfect. I don't see everyone relating to this film, and that's fine which also easily explains all the hate. All I can say is, I hope you can find a film you can relate to as much as I did to Malicks The Tree of Life and Aronofskys The Fountain.

Malick's attempt at rationalizing the importance of life in relation to the cosmos is, by its goal, doomed to be pretentious as all hell. (After all, this is a film that uses dinosaurs to show God's Grace.) So as a whole the film is a bipolar viewing experience: when Malick focuses on the beauty of his family and characters, it is one of the most rewarding in recent memory. When Malick uses oblique spiritual narration over candles and sends Sean Penn to heaven, it feels like a disaster.

I'd be lying if I said I actually understood what happened here; but My God, what a Trip! Despite it's flaws, this is one the most visually gripping, psychedelic and emotional films I've ever seen. It is pure, and absolute Visual Poetry. Tarkovskyan in Scope and Bergman-esque in ambition, I can guarantee that it unlike anything else you have ever watched.

Stunning visuals and great acting. I dropped the score because there was almost no story though the director connected nicely according mood or feelings from picture to picture. The scale reached the outer space and micro cosmos and there was no chronological timeline. Cinematography and editing were bold and ingeniously build. Director wanted to show how small fragment is a human life.

Unless I change my view one day, this is a disappointment, agonising because individual pieces of this are awe-inspiring. The segments do not connect together well and, as an agnostic who yet holds spirituality close to his heart, its incredibly vague, having its characters talk in aloft monologues about their existence but never tackling these issue, missing the point on what existential questioning should entail. Compared to profound art let alone other films this is insignificant.

Terrence Malik made a film, it was bad. Everyone will like it though because they will be too scared to say that a overly pretentious film is bad, because everyone wants to show how deep and great they are. Underlying factor is this is a bad film, I am not getting sucked in this time.

Only a filmmaker like Malick can make 'simply existing' seem like such an enlightening accomplishment. As can be expected every shot is a feast for the eyes. However, at times the style seems to drown out the substance, making the film seem a bit pretentious or aimless. Then again, the themes here are so huge and abstract that they seem impossible to pin down. What other film spends time going over the existence of everything we know? Fascinating, but might need a rewatch to sink in completely.

A time bending portrayal of a nuclear family dealing with tragedy and their juxtapositional relationship with existence. The film crosses aeons of time to contemplate the cosmos and human life's infinitesimal role. Interconnected lives are glimpsed backwards and forwards as nostalgic moments which appear as concurrent hanging fragments in time and space. The film is told with poetic imagery with the complex mournful and joyful narrated emotions of the lives we witness. Abstract but beautiful.

Filled with a lack of emotion. You will find more thought-provoking content scribbled on bathroom walls. It's a movie of infinite scope, which means that in one scene there are dinosaurs and in another completely random women stroke the female protagonist for absolutely no reason. Present it as a parody and everyone will get a lot more out of it.
