A nearly perfect movie. I have recently watch all of the movies directed by Terrance Malick back to back, from earliest to The Tree of Life. I've seldom been so moved. This is his Tour de Force. Poetry on Film.

Aesthetically speaking, this movie just might be the most impressive I've seen, every single shot is a marvel to look at. However I really didn't get what this was aiming at, and saw no connection between its pieces. Maybe it was just too religious for me, or maybe it just tries too hard not to be obvious and succeeds in that effort too much.

Very reminiscent of 2001. The quick transitions make you feel like you are watching a stream of consciousness instead of a straight narrative. Definitely an emotional ride.

Beautiful, poetic, and intensely personal, a metaphor for the harsh contrasts of life. Unfortunately it is too personal, often just a jumble of images that convey incohesive emotions, forming the outline of a narrative, out of context. I can appreciate the daring of such an approach, but it didn't work for me, I felt shut out and disconnected from the characters, unconcerned by their epiphanies and their failures.

Critics have danced around the obvious to lavish praise upon this grand folly when they need only identify that which is blatantly obvious: a self-parody is a self-parody. Individually, most of The Tree of Life's images are stunning, yet the way in which they are arranged, narrated and used by Malick negates the good will they might earn. As with the great acting displays on show, he brings them together in a great big, painfully long-winded bore of a film that earns adulation based on his fame.

I walked away from this movie absolutely stunned. Not so much a film as a an experience. Superbly directed by Terrence Malick. I'm convinced that that guy is on something none of us can even understand and the real reason why he took 20 years off is because that something was so overwhelming that he just couldn't handle it and had to take a break. I don't fuckin know. This film is a masterpiece.

I saw this in an almost empty cinema surrounded by say 10 other people seemingly unenthusiastic over Malick's highly experimental film. After the film had finished and several people had left the screening, I was incredibly enthusiastic and happy with Malick's film and the performances of the actors. This is a film that no doubt will excite audiences as much as it will displease them. This is fucking magnificent.

Very visually powerful. It was confusing for me figuring out which son actually died. I thought the creation of the universe stuff was sort of stupid but at least it helps the movie stand out and makes for some awesome special effects.

The Tree of Life is an extremely ambitious and artsy film and is NOT for the average movie-goer. It's very deep and will have you thinking about its meaning well after it's finished.

Warning-mini-spoiler alert. The movie is ambitious and reminds us that we are but a "Mote in God's Eye". We get the point of the long creation of the universe interlude (it gets a little old) and finally we get deeper into the story line. The movie makes the point that despite the mistakes we make, if we love, then we lived. The music is full of classical greats, and overall the picture is almost brilliant and worth watching.

Many will argue that this film is simply a 'slideshow of nature footage', but what I can't understand is how so many overlook the human element of the story. while the beginning and end carry on a bit too long, the birth to adolescence arc in the middle is wonderful. Malick's film may be a bit scatterbrained in structure, but its a hell of an achievement in my eyes... and of course awe inspiring and beautifully filmed.

If it had no narration or talking at all, had the ending scene changed, dispensed with the amateur Jordan Belson aping, and had that atrocious dinosaur scene cut out, it could be 92-95 material.

The Tree of Life is a monumental work that spans greater distances - temporally, spatially, emotionally, and philosophically - than any other film in cinematic history. It's unashamedly beautiful, awesomely monolithic, and tragically elegant. Malick has created a truly evocative work of art that's completely unparalleled and peerless.

Even for Malick it's fragmented and existential to extremes. That will understandably alienate some, at least too a degree, but this film is epically beautiful. Not just to look at, but to listen to as well, with the brilliant musical score supremely effective. "The Tree of Life" can be interpreted many different ways, and won't provide any answers, but will pose you plenty of questions. Demands to be rewatched.

Tree of Life is a tough film to digest. Narrative-wise it plays out like a series of recalled memories with dialogue fading in and out drifting out of sequence, yet following a path of connected emotions. Pacing-wise this will be torture for anyone with ADD with the lack of plot and long meditative shots of the sky. Photography-wise its a clear masterpiece for Malick, with imagery that will stick long past the running time.

A film of almost constant greatness, but it is not the sum of all its parts. The evolution sequence is absolutely extraordinary (as is the scenes with the *omg* dinosaurs, but those scenes were far shorter than people hyped them up to be), but it's progression is halted by the family story, which is also great but becomes bloated later on. Plus, the modern-day scenes seem arbitrary and Sean Penn is wasted. There's plenty of magnificence in a film that isn't entirely magnificent
