Major filmmakers frequently endure the "sophomore slump" after their first big film; THE TWELVE CHAIRS, which Mel Brooks made after THE PRODUCERS, isn't much of an exception. The source material was a satirical novel; Brooks tries for a more farcical approach, and the results aren't really very funny. Ron Moody's performance misses the mark; Frank Langella and Brooks himself come off somewhat better. It does boast some of the finest visual work of Brooks' career, but it's a curio at best.

I did expect the worst, but it was better then expected.

Pretty damn unfunny. Every once in a while there's a good Brooksian moment or two, but it doesn't play as well as it should; the story is really quite boring and the jokes are bland and toned-down from Mel's normal fare.

Not as amusing as Mel Brooks' best, but pretty funny. The lack of crassness is refreshing.

A pleasing Human Comedy refreshingly free from Mel's usual dirty jokes . . . Ron Moody is a delight as usual.

Much less outrageous than Brooks' usual fare. Langella misplaced; acts exactly the same from beginning to end.
