Summary: Summer people in Maine: things are changing. Whales no longer pass close to the shore as they did during the youth of two elderly widowed sisters who have a seaside home where they've summered for 50 years. Libby is blind, contrary, and seemingly getting ready to die. Sarah is attentive to her sister, worried about continuing to care for her, and half interested in an old Russian aristocrat who fishes from their shore... (imdb)

A film that acknowledges and observes the winds of change, the way we're fashioned by our experiences, gains and losses; the way uncertainty of a different variety can mark segments of our lives; the way the past can be one's most comforting stability (even when those memories are wounding). The Whales of August isn't - at least on first viewing - a great film but it is remarkable. At the least it presents the opportunity to witness former stars working within the twilight of their career/lives.

Superb. Gish is ineffably moving as the gentle caretaker who looks after her blind sister, and Davis is magnificent as the embittered, blind Libby, forever passing judgment and clearly thriving on her querulousness.
