The word that comes to mind is 'nice.' It is a good film, just not overly impressive or affecting. This is a soft and easy watch, with some neat photography and lots of delightful moments. Jean-Pierre Cargol is very good, but I felt the character was a bit mechanical and lifeless ironically.

Does a lot of things well -- technically and thematically -- but it never fully engages and thus isn't as affective as it should be.

truffaut has an interesting way of making a feral human child resemble a mentally retarded person more that movies that actually intend on depicting retardation. so if you want to praise it for that, then go ahead.

The plain, semi-documentary style sits a bit strangely amid the quaint 18th-century trappings (ruffled shirts, horse-drawn carriages, etc.) and the silent-movie affectations (iris shots, stagy camera). The movie is adamant about denying its actual date, which is rather a surprise from a fashion-plate like Truffaut

Cargol gives a great performance and the direction is controlled and effective. While watching the progress is extremely gradual, making it feel like the film is going nowhere, then suddenly there are moments where you realize just how much has changed. One of the most fascinating things to me was seeing what Itard's priorities are in teaching Victor.

I believe this film would have been much more interesting if I had seen it before Kaspar Hauser, but that aside, The Wild Child is a great film in itself. Truffaut does a marvelous job, of not only showing emotion behind the camera, but in front as well. If you are familiar with the story of Victor of Aveyron, you might think, like I did, that the ending is unjustified. Great film nonetheless.

After 'Enigma of Kasper Hauser', there isn't much left to be said with this theme of culture vs. savage instincts, but this film still has a place to fill. The languid pace is a real benefit - especially with such wonderful cinematography.

Cargol had a tough job, especially for a child actor. The part could have easily been overplayed but for the most part he manages to keep it reined in. Truffaut himself takes the other lead role. And it's a very directorial role, as the doctor who tries to teach the child exactly what to do, often physically guiding his limbs. Not one of my favorites, but it's interesting to watch "Victor" progress, and there's some intriguing commentary on the differences between "savagery" and "civilization".
