Summary: Letty moves to East Texas from the East and it seems that the wind always blows and the sand gets everywhere. While living with relatives, she finds that she is not welcomed by the wife. With no where to go, she marries a man who disgusts her. Her new home is a small shack with the wind and the sand constant companions. When it is necessary for most of the men to go out into the sand storm, one stays back to have his way with Letty and that costs both of them. (imdb)

Great drama and fantastic suspenseful atmosphere. The story overall feels a little stretched out though. It's not slow, if anything the pacing is perfect, it's just a lot of it doesn't seem that necessary in hindsight. Still very enjoyable.

In which the horrors of living in a godforsaken backwater place with dumbass hicks is weighed against the horrors of a creepy married guy trying to rape you. This is not lighthearted fare, and the climax is as intense as any modern movie I've seen. The craftsmanship on display is impressive, not just for 1928 but for any era. Most of the really good stuff comes in the third act, but I wouldn't say that the buildup is boring or anything.

The films superb atmosphere is what really sets it apart. Even on a terribly weathered print the visuals are stunning and Gish's performance really exudes bleakness and desperation. The climax is truly great and while the ending seems a bit out of sync with everything that happens before it, it doesn't detract from how enjoyable the film is.

A very well shot film with some extremely fantastic moments, both suspenseful, and romantic. Although the romance and the ending in particular seem rather contrived, it is still a worthwhile experience to see a never ending storm haunt an innocent young Virginia girl.

a flash or two a greatness, but with all the melodrama and and over the top silent expressions it's hard for sjostrom to come close to the phantom carriage. i'll give that ending my praise, it was pretty damned good.

For the time, it's fantastic (Top-10 Silents list material, perhaps even Top-5). By today's standards it's also very good; not much else than the old-fashioned-mannered comedic sidekick Sourdough betrays its age. Gish is intense, especially during the mounting tension in the effective finale, but what makes the film extraordinary are Sjöström's brilliant directorial choices. 'Take Shelter' and this could be an interesting double bill.

Unless it's a disgustingly racist piece, it seems impossible for me to not enjoy a feature with Lillian Gish. The capable direction of Sjöström certainly doesn't hurt.
