Eddie G keeps digging his own grave deeper in this taut film noir. As has been said, the ending is a bit of a humor-noted cop-out, but it hardly nullifies all that brooding tension that comes before. Lang's direction is remarkably efficient, with lots of great but unpretentious cinematography.

One can hardly imagine a more ridiculous ending, but it is a quite effective noir up to that point, tense and deliberate. Robinson is great as the modest professor, trying to walk a tightrope but continually misstepping as he tries to find a way out of the predicament he's put himself in. Entertaining, if nothing special.

The subtle tension, great acting, and restrained direction by Fritz Lang made this a great movie that lost it at the end with one of the most disappointing endings I've seen.

I was intrigued, then I was tense, then I was sad... and then I wasn't. The ending was lame, but I understand the reason and it made me laugh so whatever.

One of my favorite Fritz Lang films directed in Hollywood. Not directly Film-Noir, nor is the Cinematography particularly bleek if my memory serves me right, but it's definitely a close relative of the genre.

Lacking the urgent desperation of M, the intimate bleakness of Scarlet Street and the raw relentlessness of The Big Heat, the film fails to engage.

A solid performance from Robinson and Lang's usually fine direction elevates this little noir, which storyline and *especially* payoff could otherwise have been clichéd and even ridiculous.

Not as cinematically compelling as Lang's earlier work, but it's a tense nail-biter as you wonder what will be Robinson's undoing. There's some Raskolnikov moments as he discusses the case with his pal, the district attorney. The conclusion seems at first to be a major cop-out, but it's actually pretty clever. Lang manages to get an ending, albeit a "false" one, that would have been forbidden under the Hayes Code. The final seconds of the film, however, involve a rather hokey bit of comedy.
