This World War II drama is too ponderous to be fully effective but Brando is magnetic anytime he's onscreen as a German officer. It's fascinating to watch his naturalistic ease and compelling murmurs up against the crisp recitations of most of the other actors filling out the cast list. Even co-star Montgomery Clift, whose renowned Method intensity is generally accepted as the clear precursor to Brando's revolution, seems to be drawing from an outdated acting vocabulary when compared to Brando.
