Summary: A ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. If you're going to spend dozens of millions on (spectacular) pre- and post-production alone, why waste it on such a stupid adaptation of such a shitty comic book? As Zizek pointed out, the film easily escapes the accusations that it is a modern political allegory. Allegations of racial stereotyping also seem misguided to me. But as a more keen-eyed critic observed (Roger Moore), it does meet Sontag's definition of Fascist art.

This is all flash and no feeling. The performances from fine actors, including Butler as King Leonidas, Headey as Queen Gorgo, and West as the traitorous Theron, are overshadowed by a screenplay that is simplistic and clunky even by the standards of a comic book or graphic novel. Pretty to look at, yes, but watching it is about as involving as sitting in front of a video game demo at Best Buy.

Despite the RIDICULOUS amount of anticipation I had for this movie, it ended up not letting me down at all. It was amazing, one of the most visually stunning things ever (especially on IMAX). It captured the feel of the comic perfectly, and had my jaw dropped and my heart pumping. Yes, it's style over substance, yes it's incredibly shallow, but who gives a fuck. Naysayers be damned, 300 is goddamned incredible.

Fascinating cinematography and some great action. The gore was a little more than I needed but didn't ruin the movie for me, definitely a guy film.

Great action and amazing visuals are somewhat offset by the fascist subtext--one must be "hard", not soft. A man cannot and should not have emotions...Frankly, this is more of a criticism of the source material

Kinda cheesy, but other than that, good! The fight scenes are pretty cool and the dialouge you can quote forever.

i'd give this a 90 if i wasn't so weirded out by the excessive amount of chiselled abs. visually, it looks pretty much just like the graphic novel. it plays out much the same way, too. i liked it better than sin city.
